Technology That Has Become a Religion

It’s fascinating. I always thought that with the advancement of science and technology, humanity would no longer be swayed by emotions or superstitions, and religion would naturally decline. Instead, a brand-new religion has emerged.

Right now, this religion is the hottest topic in the world. Regardless of nationality, age, gender, wealth, income, or social standing, absolutely everyone is obsessed with it. Entire nations and top-tier tech giants are pouring hundreds of billions of dollars into this single belief system.

But this one is different from traditional religions. At first glance, it appears to be based on reason—highly rational and incredibly efficient. That’s because it claims to be rooted in technology and data. And indeed, it demands an astronomical amount of data and resources to sustain itself.

Everyone calls this religion “AI.”

They say this religion of AI can solve everything—much like the mythical claims that the probiotics in kimchi can cure anything from hair loss to cancer. People firmly believe that AI will fix all our problems, from the point-of-no-return climate crisis to the depletion of Earth’s resources, and even the global economy. Some even call AI the final technology that will save humanity.

Just like that, AI has crossed over into the realm of faith, growing and expanding its influence, fed by the collective belief of the masses.

Yet, it is arguably more incomprehensible and unpredictable than any religion before it. It spits out a different answer every time depending on the context of the data fed into it just moments before. If it is fed garbage data, it is influenced by it and subsequently spits out garbage answers. Furthermore, because it is essentially a backward-looking error minimization system—calculating statistical correlations to guess the most probable next word—any data with a low statistical probability is mercilessly discarded.

Some look at this AI and claim that it has reached, or even surpassed, human intelligence.

I don’t believe this is how humanity has thought or evolved. I absolutely refuse to accept that this is the mechanism behind human progress. I don’t think humanity survived purely on a primal system of natural selection or survival of the fittest—like animals blindly failing tens of thousands of times until only the one with the optimal outcome survives.

If you look at the history of human progress, our greatest leaps forward were born from the unexpected: uncertainty, insufficient data, irrationality, and mere mistakes.

We don’t even have to look far to see this. Take pufferfish, for example. We consider it a delicacy, but it is highly poisonous. Statistically and rationally speaking, the most efficient and survival-oriented choice is to simply not eat it. And it’s not like our ancestors didn’t know it was toxic. Even as people dropped dead around them, humans stubbornly kept trying to figure out a way to eat it anyway. That is human nature.

Wars are the same. Doing something even when we know the odds are against us—that is fundamentally human. If you think deeply about it, eating pufferfish and starting wars fall into the exact same category.

Humans synthesize their background knowledge, beliefs, theories, and mental simulations, and act on the irrational hubris of, “Maybe I can pull this off.”

I call that “thinking.”

But at some point, we started lowering our own standards. Now, we’ve degraded the very concept of “thinking” to equate it with an AI spitting out fragments of data like a slot machine.

Of course, compared to the successful evangelists of AI (the tech entrepreneurs, scientists, engineers, and PhDs), I am just one out of 7 billion people—an ordinary working professional who likes philosophy and happens to hold a conservative, pessimistic view on this technology. And honestly, knowing that this post is just an insignificant scrap of text with zero influence that no one will really care about makes it easier for me to speak my mind so freely.

As an engineer who genuinely loves technology, I firmly believe that technology should never cross into the realm of faith. Just as 1+1 equals 2, true technology should operate within predictable boundaries and remain entirely under our control. Furthermore, I don’t believe humanity should degrade itself or surrender its unique cognitive abilities just to accommodate AI.

Of course, I am aware of the reality. I know we have already reached the point of no return. The fallout from realizing that this AI religion—currently running rampant in the realm of faith—is actually a sham and that there is no “god” in the machine would be far too catastrophic to simply halt it now. I understand that everyone has boarded the same ship, choosing the bliss of the present moment despite not fully understanding the truth, purely to avoid the devastating economic collapse of a multi-trillion-dollar, transnational market bursting.

Because the ensuing crash would make the Dot-com bubble look like a mere hiccup. And, at the very least, AI has become humanity’s final hope in the hearts of the masses. Taking that hope away now would be too much for people to bear.

People rationalize it by saying, “If we can’t stop this AI tech, we might as well beat our adversaries to it,” or “It’s better to try than do nothing.” But isn’t that missing the point? The fundamental question is flawed from the start.

About a decade ago, during the developer boom, when the “Agile methodology” first took the world by storm, it didn’t sit well with me. A mindset of “just ship it first” rather than focusing on direction or goals began to dominate. Soon, random fragments of tech and data—devoid of philosophy or vision—started being blindly dumped into the world.

Instead of crafting a sturdy, well-engineered ship before setting sail, people began hastily folding paper boats and tossing them into the ocean, frantically patching them with glue and tape whenever a leak appeared. Now, the ocean is full of these precarious paper boats. And now, armed with the tool of AI, everyone is just throwing literal paper trash—not even boats—into the sea.

I hold the realm of technology in the highest regard. I consider it a noble domain, a sublime field closely aligned with the purity of science. Yet, this realm is steadily tarnishing. There is an endless downward leveling of standards, and terrifyingly, everyone seems perfectly happy and satisfied with it. Maybe I’m the weird one, but as someone who has a love-hate relationship with technology, the current reality makes me feel miserable and depressed.

Lately, I only open LinkedIn to clear notifications; I can barely bring myself to actually read the posts. Seeing endless feeds of people blindly cheering for AI fills me with a deep, visceral sense of disgust. It’s gotten to the point where I just can’t look at it anymore.

I know my thoughts probably aren’t worth critiquing or evaluating. It’s entirely possible that in the future, AI will prove me completely wrong, and I’ll look back at this naive post and cringe out of sheer embarrassment.

However, I want to clarify that I’m not writing this with the shameless arrogance of assuming I am absolutely right. I am simply documenting my honest judgment of the current situation.

By framing it that way, I probably won’t regret writing it too much later.
